Happy Half Birthday Finley

Dear Finley,

Today you are 2 and a half years old.  I cannot believe that my baby is almost 3!  Where did the time go?  It seems like just yesterday that you were this tiny little creature teaching me the real value of love, life and everything in between.

Here are some fun facts about you may or may not remember:

*You loves banana's.  You would eat 10 a day if I let you.  I usually only allow 1 or 2 a day and make you eat a apple instead.  You insist on eating the apple whole and not sliced up.  I have to watch you though because sometimes you will eat the core too.

*You have never been driven in car by someone other than myself or Greg.  People think I am crazy but it's a control issue I have.

* You love playing outside.  You loved playing in the snow despite your hatred for winter gear, you love your trike, your pink coupe, you love playing with sidewalk chalk, blowing bubbles and taking walks with us.  You love slides of all kind, you love playing on the jungle gym in the backyard and are so excited for your new playhouse to be set up if it ever quits snowing.

*You have never ever spent the night the night away from both of us at once.  I have only been away from you for 2 nights when Penelope was born.  I realize that I have to let go of this but again, it's part of the control that I need.  I hate not knowing how you are or what you are doing all of the time.

*You have never had her hair cut.  You are getting better with having it brushed but I have had to buy some leave in detangler because you have the worst bed head ever.  It looks like dread locks sometimes.  You are also letting me put in barrettes and pony tails.  The only downside to this is that we lose a lot of barrettes.  In fact, I need restock because we have very few left.

*You are a relatively good eater.  You will eat most of things.  Your favorites include green beans, glazed carrots, meat with any kind of sauce on it, seafood, peanut butter + jam sandwiches, grilled cheese, pancakes, yogurt and of course anything that satisfies your sweet tooth which is quite hard to satisfy it seems....

*You love to wear thongs, rubber boots + crocs.  You get angry when it snows in April and are forced to put your winter boots back on.  You don't like winter boots or jackets or ski pants.  I figure one day you will move to a climate where winter does not exist.

*You love music, singing and dancing.  Listening to her sing is quite funny.  You still love Taylor Swift and The Doodlebops but also enjoys all varieties of music.  You love youtube because you can see the people singing and dancing.

*You love Sesame Street.  Elmo + Abby Cadabby are your favorite although you get really excited for Murray goes to school segment where it starts out with Murray Had A Little Lamb who wore a little bow....if you watch you know what I mean.  You have a lamb at Grandpa Don + Grandma Jen's place that you love and whenever I see you holding it, I sing that song.  Sesame Street is the only show you will sit through and has learned a lot from watching it.  We will have Tree House or Family Channel on but you will rarely sit down long enough to get "in" to any one show.

*You love getting dressed and will randomly change your clothes throughout the day.  You are now developing an attitude for what you will and will not wear.  For example, we were going out for Uncle Neil's birthday dinner and you would only wear pink leggings that had some kind of stain on them.  Not sure what.  I tried to get you into different leggings and skirts to no avail.  You refused. You also will not wear one piece pajama's or anything with feet.  If you have feet on your jammies then you can't wear shoes and yes you wear shoes to bed.  Sometimes you go to bed in one pair and wake up in another.  Same goes with the pajama's you are wearing.

*You are very artistic and love doing crafts, colouring and painting.  You have to be super supervised when doing these activities because colour ends up on things that are not supposed to have colour on.  We learned just how washable Crayola Washable Crayons actually are.  Very washable, all green crayon was washed off of my walls.

* You love to play pretend with you stuffed animals + dolls.  Many of them are dressed in diapers and wear Penelope's clothes.  You feed them when Penelope gets fed, they nap at the same time and they play with the same toys when Penelope has moved on to something else.  You love to push them in your doll stroller and grocery cart and kiss them good night.

* You insist on sleeping with her beloved cat and pink blanket every single night.  You cannot sleep without it.  You go through phases where other animals/dolls may be included but these 2 are needed or you won't sleep.  When we travel, they travel.    We lost the kitty once at the Coach store in Chinook.  Thank God Greg realized it was missing.  When he went back to the Coach store they had saved it for him as they had recognized it.  I don't know what we would have done without kitty.

* You love your sister Penelope.  Well most of the time you do.  I think you have already developed that love-hate relationship that most sisters' have until they are much older and appreciate how lucky they are.  You love to help out with Penelope - folding her diapers, getting her diapers + wipes, bibs so she doesn't get dirty, facecloths to wash her face if she slops, you love to carry her bottle up to her and ensure that it doesn't roll away.  You love to get her shoes + jacket and sharing the puff wheat + cheerios with her.  You love to give her cuddles, kisses + hugs.  While you get mad when she touches some of "your" stuff, you will happily grab other toys for her to play with.  You only get angry when she grabs your kitty and blanket which is ok because that doesn't need to be shared.  She likes to pull your hair + grab your necklaces which you hate but don't worry, soon she will quit.

* You don't always like to share.  That being said, I am seeing HUGE improvements in this area.  While I encourage sharing of most items, some things don't need to be shared and I am finding it a hard balance between the two and being able to teach you what is acceptable and what isn't.

* Finley, you love to cook!  You will cook meals at your kitchen as I prepare ones in the big kitchen.  However, you are a great help when it comes to baking.  You usually dump all the measured dry goods into the bowls, crack the eggs + help stir.  It can a little messy but you really enjoy it.  You like to point to the spot on the cookie sheet where the next cookie should go and same with muffins and muffin tins.  You love to vacuum, sweep and dust as well as unload and load the dishwasher.  I tease daddy that you already better than him and you are only 2.5 years old.

* You quit napping months ago, shortly after Penelope was born.  You will always sleep in the car and sometimes crash on the couch.  You go to bed consistently at 8pm every night  and will sleep anywhere between 11 + 12 hours each night.  You love to be read to and your favorite book right now is Brown Bear, Brown Bear.  You love books that you can pop up but we keep them hidden from you because you tend to destroy the pop ups and then get upset when they are no longer there.

* You love swimming lessons, gymtastics, dance class and are looking forward to giggle toes which we start next month.  You love being around other kids and enjoy going to Caffe Creme, Kidz n Koffee, Play a Latte + other indoor playgrounds.

* You are for the most part potty trained.  You are 100% poop trained but peeing in the potty can be great and sometimes downright terrible.  We're definitely headed in the right direction.  Night time potty training is still a major fail but that can take much longer than day time training.  Getting your pull up off in the morning can be sometimes be unpleasant but you seem to love your potties and panties and are so very proud when you successfully go in them.

* You love playing with puzzles, blocks and mega blocks.  You love to build things and knock them down.  You can play for hours with your puzzles.  You do them over and over and are always so proud when you finish them.  You are such a smart little cookies.

* You are very good at understanding all the words that daddy and I use around  you.  I worry that you are not talking as much as you should be.  Most people think I am just over reacting.  I know you can speak tonnes of words because I have heard you but for some reason you don't like to use them.  I don't know if you are being stubborn or just lazy.  I really don't know.  At 24 months, Dr Bernhardt said you were developing like a normal child.  He has since left the clinic and am debating whether to take you to see our new doctor to get his opinion.

* You love having tea parties, saying "cheers" when we drink our tea, playing with all kinds of necklaces + bracelets and you love your coach purse that is full of the most fascinating items.  I guess you never know when you will need a rattle, frying pan or baby bottle right?  You love talking on your cell phone + taking pictures with your camera.  Your favorite subjects are your kitties, Penelope and me when I am taking a picture of you!

All in all Finley, you are one of the sweetest, most loveable girls I know.  You bring a smile to my face every single days and it warms heart to see you smile, laugh and so happy - especially on days where I don't think I am doing a great job.  Your kisses, cuddles, hugs and high fives are some of my proudest moments.

Happy Half Birthday Finley, We love you!!!

Royal Wedding

I was one of those crazy people who woke up at 2am to watch The Royal Wedding and I am happy that I did.  Although I am insanely tired right now, both kids are being very well behaved so it is turning out to be a pretty good day.

I loved Kate's dress.  It was exactly as I suspected it would be although I thought it would have solid sleaves and not lace but it worked.  Traditionally, Royal wedding dresses must have sleeves.  I am not a huge fan of sleeves but I think it worked for the occasion.  I was not a fan of her veil or crown that she wore and didn't like her hair either.  It was just too ordinary for such an extraordinary day.  The earring she wore were simply amazing and have found out that they were a wedding gift from her parents and were designed to match the tiara.

I absolutely loved Pippa's dress.  It was more stunning than Kate's dress in my opinion.  There wasn't a single thing I didn't like about her dress.  Somewhere up in heaven, Alexander McQueen is one happy dude.

Some of my favorite moments of the wedding were when Harry turned and saw Kate walking down the aisle and he said to his brother "Just wait til you see her" and when Prince William was having trouble putting the ring on Kate.  It looked like it was too small. You'd think that this was something that would've been done considering it was a custom made ring.  I LOVED when Prince William told Kate how beautiful she was when she got to the altar.  It was just so perfect.  And my final favorite moment was when they just got into the carriage to go to Buckingham Palace and Kate said I am just so happy and the smile on their faces was just awesome.

Probably my favorite part of the wedding was all the fascinators.  My favorites were Princess Beatrice's and Victoria Beckham's.  They were off the hook.  Piers Morgan's wife also had a pretty cool hat on.  I loved seeing them all - so crazy and colourful and unique.

Anyways thats all I have to say about the Royal Wedding.  It was pretty fabulous and tonight when I am in bed at 6pm, it will still be worth it.

Easter in Saskatoon

Easter weekend did not go well.  Well parts of it did.  But most of it sucked.  It all started on the Wednesday before Good Friday.  Finley wasn't feeling well.  She wasn't eating or playing - basically sleeping + drinking milk.  This continued onto Thursday but by Thursday night, we thought she was out of whatever funk she had been in for the last 2 days.  Turns out we were wrong.  So very wrong.

Getting to Grandma Gail's on Good Friday.  Uncle Brad showed Finley the slinky and both kids were loving it.  Finley especially loved making it go down the stairs.  Looks like another birthday present idea....

I think Finley thought this was like the tunnel she has in our basement.  She found out quickly that this was not the case as she got stuck going in.  This one is for the mean cats who inhabit Grandma Gail's house.  I am not kidding, these cats like nobody.  Maybe they like Gail + Aaron but I have yet to witness any affection from the cats.

Finley playing with some toys that Grandma Gail had kept of Uncle Brad's, Daddy's + Uncle Aaron's.  It was pretty cool to see the old school little people farm house.  the animals were so much cooler back then.

Unfortunately, these were the only good photo's I got from Good Friday at Gail's place.  Shortly after arriving, I got hit instantly with the 2nd worst migraine of my entire life and I am not even close to exaggerating.  It basically ruined my entire weekend.  In fact, I did not eat another meal until last night.  Every meal I have eaten since then were bites.  It sucked big time.  It was so bad, I cried on the floor right beside the couch in the above photo where Brad was sitting.  I then went to sleep downstairs in the basement where I proceeded to vomit all over the floor because I couldn't make it to the bathroom.  I literally woke up and vomited.  It was awful and poor Greg had to clean it up.  Hopefully there wasn't any permanent damage to the carpet (Please let me know Gail).  I soon overdosed on drugs and was able to fall asleep at my sister's house.  However, the headache + nausea stayed throughout the entire weekend!

On Saturday morning, we met for breakfast and were able to visit with Great Grandma Erna, Great Grandpa John (who loved the pink john deere bib that P was wearing...Thanks again Jyl), Great Aunty Kathy, Cousin Sascha who was in from Ottawa.  It was great seeing her as she is moving to  Hong Kong for 2 years in July.  Also there was Grandma Gail + Uncle Brad.  I was really happy that we got to see them as the following day's events prevented us from attending the Diederich Family Easter at Aunty Kathy's place.

We followed breakfast out with lunch at Bonanza on 8th Street.  My most favorite place in Saskatoon and where we eat every single time we visit.  We were able to see my old boss Byron but unfortunately Gary + Shannon were off this time.  I was mad that I was still sick as I was unable to enjoy the deliciousness of a chicken monterey sandwich and french fries dipped in catalina.  Greg make's it here but it just isn't the same as there.  Oh so good.

This was Easter Dinner held on Saturday night at my Aunty Sandy's.  Easter dinner also culminated with Jimmy's birthday which was that night and Ashton's which was next Saturday.

Gluten free ice cream cake from Dairy Queen much to the dismay of my mom, Kristy, Greg and probably others.  It didn't have the cookie crumbs like they normally do.  I don't care because I hate ice cream cake.

Ashton's birthday cake.  It had a Toy Story theme.  It was pretty tasty.

The Birthday Boys

Ashton playing with his vacuum cleaner.  He loves to clean.

Finley on Easter morning.  She looks happy but she wasn't.  She slept terribly which resulted in terrible sleeps for everybody else.

2 of their Easter Baskets.  They were spoiled ridiculously by our family.  You should see the stuff we brought home with us!

Finley somewhat participating in the Easter Egg hunt.  No chocolate eggs for these kids.  Their Easter eggs were full of hair ties, bracelets, bubbles, fruit snacks, silly bands, and stuff like that.  Although they did get a fair amount of chocolate - some of which we ate and some of which is being frozen for baking purposes.

Another Easter Egg hunt at Great Aunty Sandy's.  Finley cheated and carried her basket around in a wagon while looking for Eggs with letters F + P on them.

Madison changing Penelope's diaper with quite the audience.  She is taking her Babysitting course soon after she turns 11 in June.  Her mom decided she needed to practice changing diapers in case she needs to do this while babysitting and Penelope was good practice material.  I was impressed because the first diaper I changed was Easton's and he's the tall boy on the end with the blonde hair.  He was about a month old and he pooped.  I didn't know what to do so I stuck him in the bathroom sink and sprayed him off.  He didn't like it.  The worst part?  I was like 24 years old.

This is why we left a day early and missed Easter lunch at Aunty Kathy's.  It turns out that Finley was not feeling better.  In fact, her not feeling well before we left was a precursor into the hacking cold she had.  It was awful and no sleep Saturday night made it a million times worse.  We couldn't get her to nap for the life of us and she ended up having a severe breakdown.  We decided to leave Sunday afternoon instead of Monday like we originally planned.  And although I am disappointed to miss seeing family and going to the dinosaur museum in Drumheller, I am glad we did.  She slept all the way home, had a good night sleep and was much happier Monday morning.  Unfortunately, both her + Penelope still have colds but they are happier at home then being away.

So I apologize for no photos with Grandma's + other family members but it was a tough, tough weekend.  We did learn a valuable lesson though: NO TRAVELLING UNLESS ALL KIDS ARE 100% OK!!!!!!!

Kupcake Kreations at Kulinary Kids

On Tuesday afternoon, Kulinary Kids hosted a Easter Kupcake Kreations Event at their store.  It was held from 1 - 3 but Michelle from our Mom's Group got us in at 1230 before the rest of the people showed up.  I am so thankful she did that because it was simply insane with just us in there!

Here is Finley after putting on her apron.  I apologize for the blurriness of some photos but Penelope is teething and demands attention and I had forgotten the Ergo Carrier at home so I had to carry her, take photos + help Finley.  It was tough.

Here Finley was trying to frost the kupcake on her own.  Unfortunately the icing was super thick and tough to do - even for me.

But eventually we got the hang of it - even if it meant more frosting that was necessary.

Time to dip the kupcakes in Easter coloured frosting

And then of course decorate them with mini eggs, jelly beans and gum shaped as eggs

Penelope chilling on the floor under Finley's chair.  She was pleasant momentarily.

Finley putting the finishing touches on her masterpieces.  Looks like she was putting a lot of thought into it!

Her finished product.  For $2 you got 2 kupcakes.  I was unaware thinking it was $2 per kid and that was one cupcake.  It was pretty awesome deal and all of us had kupcakes for dessert that night.  Well except for Penelope.

Some Easter Egg crafts that Finley made after decorating the Kupcakes.

And then it was time for some colouring.  With markers.  Her first time using markers ever.  We have some crayola markers at home but have yet to let her use them.  Seeing what she has done with crayons, pen + sharpies you can understand why I am skeptical.

Since Penelope couldn't have a kupcake, we only needed 3 for dessert.  So Finley and I split one before she went down for a nap (well fell asleep watching Sesame Street, but it counts)

She clearly enjoyed her kupcake.

This was a stellar event and if you have never been to Kulinary Kids it is simply amazing. The baking stuff they have is ridiculous not to mention every Melissa + Doug toy related to food.  Some I have never seen in other stores!!  Y'all definitely need to check it out!

Can't wait until we do this again!

How Finley Looked When She Woke Up Monday Morning

Play A Latte

On Monday morning, the mom's group that I belong to met up at Play A Latte.  I had never been there before but I knew Finley would love it thanks to the Calgary playground reviews that can be found here  .   I love this site and am always on it trying to find new places to take the kids.  She did not disappoint with her review.

Finley actually rode Thomas the Train but I was pushing her so I didn't get any pictures

They had numerous bouncy houses which Finley loved especially the big one with the slide.  She loved it!  She is a slide girl though!  It was well worth the $7 to get in considering all the activities there for the kids.  It is wide open with lots of room for the kids to run around. We had a great time playing and visiting with other moms.  I thought we'd stay longer but Finley came + grabbed her jacket and put it on signalling it was time to call it a morning.  She made it through with no accidents + one successful trip to the potty.

We can't wait for the next get together Tuesday afternoon.

If you live in the South and want a fabulous group to join, check out it out on facebook here

UPDATED:

How tired were Finley + Penelope you ask after a morning at Play A Latte?  Here's how tired they were:

Penelope was so tired that I am quite certain that she finished her bottle while sleeping. I picked her up, carried to her room, put her in her grobag into her crib without her waking up where she slept for 4 hours.  Heaven I tell you.

An hour later, this was Finley on the couch.  Out cold for about 2 hours.  What did I do? Laid on the couch and watched tv.

Total heaven.
