I did some major spring cleaning yesterday in our bedroom. It is now the cleanest it has been probably since we moved in. This is the room that is the most neglected in our house. The bathroom is cleaned regularly but other than that, nothing else is. Nobody ever sees it so it's not high on my priority list. And usually by the time I am finished cleaning the other rooms in my house, it's time to start over again! I cleaned out my dresser and my closet and I have come to the conclusion that I have way too many clothes. I counted 27 bunny hugs and that doesn't include anything from lululemon or the ones that I have already given Madison or are in a pile to be given to her. It's ridiculous!!! I found summer clothes I forgot I had after being pregnant 2 of the last 3 summers so I am excited for "new" summer clothes to be worn!! I was hoping to find my Burberry watch that I lost awhile back but it was not to be found. I have no idea where it could be. So sad.
Yesterday I sent Finley to her room for stealing cookies again. I caught her earlier and told her if she did it again she was having a time out in her room. i went to get her after a few minutes and she was fast asleep. Score!! She never naps in her room anymore. The best I get are sporadic naps in the car or on the couch. The best part is that when she woke up, her panties were dry and she ran right to the potty. This morning she came downstairs, pulled down her pull up + went potty. Her pull up was still wet but this is definitely progress. She had one accident yesterday but other than that, she was pretty awesome!
I was quite excited that spring had finally arrived after a few beautiful days that allowed us to get outside but I just saw David Spence tweet about the forecast coming up and it is not fun! A snowstorm on Saturday night? Are you kidding me? Mother Nature is certainly irritating me - just pick a season already!!! And it better be spring!
So after the Flames lost last night, the flame has dimmed in hopes of making the playoffs. If Chicago goes 2 - 4 in their last 6, and we win out, we can make it. The only positive from the Flames not making the playoffs is that we will definitely be back in Saskatoon for Easter. We were going to stay home if there were home playoff games to attend. It looks like that will not be a problem. So sad.
Dancing With The Stars started last week with the first elimination being held Tuesday. I have no idea who the guy eliminated was but wasn't too impressed with either of his dances. I am not a huge fan of Lacey anyways. Finley loved Chelsea Kane the first week and this week seemed to love Chris Jericho. I think I am also cheering for Jericho but I don't really have a clear favorite at this point. Finley loves to watch them dance and imitate them. It's pretty cute to watch. Her genes don't really indicate a dancing ability but you just never know!
I bought a pair of rubber boots at Walmart on Monday. From the kids section. They were $10 cheaper. They are not the prettiest of rubber boots, but most definitely not the ugliest. Finley and I had fun jumping in puddles yesterday. Can't wait until Penelope can join us for the fun.
I am still overridden with guilt over Penelope's name. I still don't like it. I had hoped and hoped that I would come to like it again but I just can't. I feel like the absolute worst mother in the entire world for feeling like this. I am also positive that she will hate me one day because of her name. I don't even like any nicknames associated with the name. I used to love Poppy but now not really and I don't really like Penn or Penny. I tried calling her Grier and she smiled at me when I did but it seems weird calling her by her middle name. I love how Penelope Grier sounds but I just can't grasp it. I asked Greg if we could change it but he vetoed that. One of my managers back at Sasktel changed her son's name when he was around 6 months old because it didn't suit him. People would seriously think I am insane if I do that.....
Penelope is still sucking her thumb and I still hate it. I had hoped that she would quit once she got teeth and bit herself just like Finley did but that has not been the case. She doesn't seem to be doing it as often but I still notice it. As long as she is not like the 6 year old pushing a cart with a soother in her mouth, I think I will survive. No I am not exaggerating.
I am seriously annoyed with IKEA. When Finley first started eating solids we bought 6 bowls + plates each for $1.99. They are amazing but we need more bowls. We went to IKEA nearly a month ago and they had their cutlery, plates + cups but no bowls. So I have been consistently checking back on their website to see if they have gotten any in stock and they haven't. In fact, I could only find them in Coquitlam and some place in Quebec. I wonder if they are discontinuing them? I really hope not because I have no idea what I would be able to find so cheaply and brightly colored??? Come on Ikea, get them back in stock!!
We found a charcoal shag rug at Bed Bath and Beyond over the weekend. We bought it to replace the ugly, worn foam mats that have lived in our bonus room for more than 2 years. I hated them so much. Hated them. I am sure you know what I am talking about and probably have them somewhere in your house. I just couldn't take it anymore. The rug looks so much nicer and is just as soft for the kids to play on. I am much happier with this decision. We put a for free ad on kijiji for the mats and we got like 50 emails for people wanting them. Why can't I get that response when trying to sell our baby swing + car seat??? hahaha
After several batches of cookies not turning out, I finally made a batch of chocolate chunk cookies yesterday that tasted delicious. Hopefully this means my funk is over. I really hope so because I have some super healthy muffins that I want to make!
That's all my rumblings for now. I am off to have a pajama party this morning with Finley and Penelope and watch Elmopalooza. Should be a fun break from all the cleaning that I did yesterday!!
Happy Thursday!!

Spring Has Sprung. At Least For A Day or Two....
We took advantage of the first nice, warm, sunny day in a long time and went for a walk. I originally intended to go to Fish Creek so Finley can run free but I needed to get a few things for dinner so I decided we would head to Sobeys. It is a nice walk and would give us the opportunity for fresh air and feel the sunshine.
Finley and Penelope before getting ready to go. I wanted to use the baby carrier for Penelope and the wagon for Finley + groceries but my ergo carrier was just not co-operating with me at all.
So I bucked her in the wagon with Finley and surrounded her with blankets and she LOVED it. Finley was a little put out that she had to unbuckle her kitty and move her to her side. But she got over it.
The girls enjoying the weather!!!
On our way home. My arms were like jello by the time we reached our house. I was thankful to get home. It was a great workout, nice to get out of the house, and I realized that walking to Sobey's with the girls and groceries and back wasn't too bad and I should do it more often. I used to do it all the time with Finley. Hopefully the weather will co-operate!
I was a little annoyed with the lady at the self checkout at Sobey's. She kept referring to Penelope as a cute little prince. SHe is wearing pink and surrounded by pink blankets - seriously!!!!! DRIVES ME CRAZY!!!
The temperature is supposed to reach 10 degrees tomorrow and I am trying to convince myself that I can manage both kids at the zoo by.my.self. We will see how that goes......
PS, No accidents for Finley!!

Potty Training Update
So we've had some major successes since my last potty training update. Finley goes in the potty probably 90% of the time, the other 10% consists of accidents on the floor and at night.
She goes both pee and poop in the potty. She has gone from no, no while doing her business to pure excitement. She no longer asks for stickers because she is just so excited and loves the praise she gets from us.
I am still constantly remind her if she needs to go potty. She sometimes gets really annoyed me with me and other times she runs to the potty and goes. But she is getting better and better at going when she needs to go.
We have gone out the last few days without a diaper. On Saturday, we went to Chinook Mall and Bed, Bath + Beyond so I put her in panties and a pull up just in case the bathrooms were nuts at the mall. We asked her if she needed to go and she kept saying no. Shortly after we got home, she went oh no and ran to the potty. She was a little wet but had managed to stay dry until we got home. On Sunday, We went and ran some errands and ended up at lunch time, she asked to go potty 2x. The first time was just a dribble but I was happy none the less. 3 minutes after being back at the table, she asked to go again and this time had a real pee. She was only wearing panties and no pull up. We then went to Zellers, Home Depot + Winners without incident. Yesterday, We went to Walmart + Giant Tiger and she was wearing panties and had no accidents. This is great news.
I had been putting Finley to bed in pull ups. Last night, I decided to put panties on her. When I checked on her before I went to bed, she was still dry. Just before 4am, I heard screaming. I went in and she had peed the bed. I changed everything and put her in a pull up and she went back to sleep.
Several people have told me once you put her in panties never go back. And although I agree with them to a certain extent, many books I read have also said that night time training takes a bit longer and it is normal to use pull ups at night and not during the day. Finley is definitely ready for strictly panties during the day but she hasn't reached that level of readiness for the night time and I think we will continue to use the pull ups at night and put her in panties maybe once a week until she is able to sleep without peeing.
All in all, I am impressed with how fast Finley has gone from diapers to panties. It was literally less than a week. I have definitely come to the conclusion that potty training is super easy once the kid being trained is ready. If the kid is not ready, then you are not going to have success. I have proven this by having NO success in the last 8 months since I first put Finley on the potty.
However, at the same time, potty training is simply exhausting - constant reminders, cleaning up pee that she gets on the floor while "helping" emptying the potty, cleaning up the accidents, moving the potty from room to room because of baby gates and a active baby, washing panties because she likes to change them throughout the day. We bought her new panties on Sunday and she wore all 7 pairs yesterday while only having 2 accidents. Regardless, I am so happy that she is almost diaper free. Then on to Penelope. Seriously happy we're only having 2 kids......
See ya for the next update in a few days.......

Potty Time
A few weeks ago we had some success with Finley on the potty. Out of nowhere one Sunday night, she pulled her pants down, took off her diaper and went potty. We didn't suggest or anything. I was so excited!
A few days later, she took of her diaper + pants but had no desire to go potty. She was sitting in the bonus room where most of her toys + tv are. She was playing with her puzzles. I asked if she needed to go potty and she said no. I told her if she felt the need to go potty then she better go to the potty because if she pees where she is sitting, she will wreck her puzzle pieces. A few seconds later, she got up and went pee on the potty. SCORE!!
We were going away for a few days, so potty training was put on hold as I don't want her peeing all over my family's house. When we got back to Calgary, Finley + I got hit with a nasty virus and potty training was simply out of the question considering the diarrhea she was hit with.
On Wednesday, we had no plans to leave the house so I thought we'll try with the panties and see how we do. She wore panties from the time she got up until it was time for bed. She peed once + pooped once on the toilet. She was very proud of her poop in the potty. It was kinda funny. Sorry if it's tmi but most of us who read this blog are either going through it or have already done so!! After supper, she ran to the potty but missed it by a cm and peed on the floor. It was a semi successful day despite the fact that I had to clean up 7 accidents off the floor. Thank God we got rid of the carpet in the bedrooms, bonus room + family room!!!! Playtime in the basement playroom is quite limited as there is carpet down there.
This morning, I again put Finley in panties. She loves her panties. Today has been a super success and it is only 127pm. All pee has been peed in the potty and NO accidents. I kept asking her and asking her and she would either say no and continue what she was doing or say no and then run to the potty and go. I have found that when she goes "Oh No" and then grabs her self to hold the pee, she needs to go and is quite good at doing this and letting me know. In fact, she just did this and I said go potty and she just brought me her potty cup full of pee so proud!
I don't keep the potty in the bathroom as we have not reached that level yet. I basically carry the potty from room to room depending where we are. Once she gets the hang of it, then I will move it to a bathroom. Some potty books frown upon this, others say go with whatever works. This works best considering the layout of our house.
Every time she has a successful potty attempt, she goes and empty's the potty, cleans herself and washes her hands. She then gets a sticker on each hand. She loves stickers. Her arms are full of stickers as we speak. I have different stickers in each room, although I am thinking I am going to need to go buy more. The downside to her success is that I am finding stickers everywhere. I am trying to convince her to put them into her sticker album but she is having none of that.
My main concern now is leaving the house. It's been going good since we haven't had to leave the house at all but I have to leave today to pick my sister up from downtown where she is training and so Finley will have to leave the comfort zone of our house. Now the question is, do I keep her in panties or put her in pull ups? She doesn't understand pull ups and as far as she is concerned, they are just like diapers. What if I put her in a pull up and regress? My fear is that we will be driving down Macleod Trail or somewhere in the middle of downtown and she is gonna go "OH NO" and need to pee and we have no where to go. Do I bring our potty or just the portable seat that goes over the big seat that she doesn't much like anymore? What if she pees while we are driving? I don't mind changing her panties and pants but do I do with her wet carseat??? I am quite stressed and we have the house in about 2 and a half hours.....
Any tips would be MUCH APPRECIATED!!!

Finley's A Gold Medal Winner
Last Wednesday was Finley's last Gymtastic's class for the Winter Session. Here are some photos of her!
Finley always grabbed 2 balls - one for her, one for me. They had to be similar balls and could not be different. This was consistent throughout each class.
She loves to swing on the rings. Can't wait till the snow melts and she can get to her swing set. She is going to have so much fun on it!
She hated the balance beam. She'd gladly crawl down it but hung on to you with a death grip if you made her walk across it.
She loves ALL slides!!
Playing hockey with Maksim
She walked across the rope bridge with some assistance from myself.
Running through the tires on the big kids side
Crawling through the hoops!
Running down the trampoline to the big cushion like things
We jumped on the trampoline together, it was fun. I want one for our backyard.
Playing this marked the end of gym class. It is pretty cool and all kids liked it.

Meatless Monday
After missing last week due to norovirus hitting us hard, we are back again with another meatless monday entree. This is what I was gonna make last week so I did it today.
Vegetarian Bean + Barley Soup
1/2 onion, diced
2 ribs celery, diced
2 carrots, diced
any other vegetables desired, 1/2 cup each
2 tbsp olive oil
8 cups water or vegetable broth
1 cup barley, uncooked
1 cup pinto or white beans, pre-soaked if dry
1/3 cup tomato paste or crushed potatoes
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1/4tsp celery salt - optional
1/2 tsp basil
1/2 tsp oregano or italian mix
1/2tsp thyme
2 large bay leaves
1 tsp onion powder - optional
Preparation:
1. In a large soup pot, add the oil + saute the onion, celery, carrots + any other vegetables you desire for 3 - 5 minutes
2. Add vegetable broth or water and all other ingredients and bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to medium low.
3. Allow to simmer for at least an hour, stirring occasionally, until barley is soft + somewhat fluffy
4. Add more spices to taste + Enjoy.
I used potatoes because I like potatoes in my vegetable soup. Greg likes barley so it's a happy medium with us. I also forgot to add any of the spices until 45 minutes after it had been cooking but it tasted alright. It was actually really good and Finley loved it - especially dipping her french bread into the broth. She even ate the white beans. Me on the otherhand, loved it with exception to the kidney beans. I've come to the conclusion that all beans except green + yellow beans are gross. Hopefully Greg will enjoy it when he gets home tonight. He worked later then usual and missed supper with us.

A Visit
Grandma Gail arrived on Friday for a weekend visit. We were happy to have her as we hadn't seen her since Christmas. Finley and Penelope LOVED all the attention that they received while she was here!
On Friday, we went to Boston Pizza with her and Uncle Brad and then back to our house for some visiting before Grandma Gail + Uncle Brad went to a movie and we all went to bed!
On Saturday morning, Grandma Gail went to watch Finley at her first swimming lesson with daddy. She is now in the third and final level of Parents + Tots. If she passes, she will be on her very own!!
Uncle Brad came over for supper on Saturday night and the kids were continually spoiled by our company! Finley and Uncle Brad went for a walk to try and find puddles for Finley to jump in with her new rubber boots.
On Sunday, we had brunch with Grandma Gail before she headed back to Saskatoon. I am sure the girls are missing all of the fun, attention and love they got from Grandma Gail. See you at Easter time!

It's A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood
It was a beautiful week in Calgary last week, unfortunately we were not able to enjoy it until Friday and by then it wasn't as warm as it was earlier in the week. So on Friday we went to Sobey's after lunch and when we got home, we played outside.
The only smile I got out of Poppy. The sun was in her eyes and she didn't like it. I need to get her a pair of sunglasses or at least find some of the ones that Finley has outgrown and hope she keeps them on. Finley refused to wear sunglasses until she was 18 months. Now she loves them.
Coloring on our driveway with sidewalk chalk. She loves it, Daddy hates it. So because of this, I help color the driveway. I was at Walmart the other day and bought 3D chalk with glasses for $2. It was on clearance. I can't wait to use it!
Finley getting her car ready for use after being indoors all winter. She is now able to drive it forward which she was unable to do until the very end of the season last year.
Cruising down the driveway. I was impressed that she knew how to stop and start her car. She has gotten so smart since she last had it out!! Notice the netting on the back of her car. It's a UV protector for Poppy's carseat. I wanted to take it off but Finley wanted it on there.
End of the line and time to turn around. It was wonderful for us to finally get to enjoy the beautiful warm weather especially since a snow fall warning was being issued for Calgary. Thankfully we only got a sprinkling and it is a beautiful Sunday out there. Finley especially loved being able to play in her car, crush melting snow and drawing on the driveway. Hopefully the warm weather continues and we can head to the zoo, Fish Creek or even the park around the corner!

PeaPod
When Finley was born, we had wanted to buy a nice little fold up playpen to use when camping or travelling outside of Calgary. The only one was by Phil + Ted and was $250 and that seemed ridiculous. So we bought a nice colourful one from Sears. It has served its purpose well but now with a second baby, the space taken up by said play pen is much too valuable. Thankfully, since Finley's birth there have been advancements in this area.
Enter in the Kidco PeaPod.
This is Greg holding it up unfolded. It comes with a mattress that inflates on its own which is quite handy. There are several different models of the Peapod and the one we got is called the PeaPod Portable Self Inflating Travel Bed - Lime.
Greg starting to put the PeaPod away. Nice and easy.
We purchased it at Kacz Kids which was $10 more than the few places in Canada that had free shipping. It was nice to have it and know that we have it in time for Easter.
It went from open to closed in mere minutes. It's light, simple + easy to use. This is fantastic because now it will be easy to take to my aunt's or greg's dads place for Poppy to sleep in when they babysit. And when we are in Saskatoon, we can take it down and put it up anywhere so that she can nap! I am so happy we have this! Now, anybody want to buy a playpen? Only used for sleeping, not for as a contraption to keep kids in one place! haha

Poppy's 7 Months!
Dear Poppy,
That's what I like to call you. Your daddy doesn't like it very much. He prefers to call you Squeaks or Penelopoop. Your big sister likes to call you P or B, Poppy, Puppy, Baby or Babe. Regardless, we are just happy you have blessed our lives Miss Penelope Grier!
So much has happened since our last letter to you!! Here are some of your milestones and activities!
You cut two teeth! Yes, two teeth! And they are just a popping up so fast. The first tooth came in on February 20th and the second one came up a few days later. You are so cute with your little stubs for teeth.
You are a roller. You can boogie all around the bonus room floor and at lightning speed. You can move from your Baby Einstein mat to the couches or your sister in mere seconds. Sometimes I just turn my head for a second and you are not where I last saw.
You are able to get onto your knees so I am so sure that you will be crawling soon. Your sister didn't crawl until she was almost 10 months so this is so exciting for us. Of course, that means that we are gonna have to do something with the gate blocking the bonus room, where we spend most of our time, to the stairs as Finley has busted it and it is no longer safe for a lil baby like you!
You are a squeaker. A very loud squeaker. Sometimes I have no idea if you are happy or dying. There is no difference. People stop me in the grocery and say you are angry and I am like you are smiling, you are happy. You like to be heard. You come by it honestly.....hahaha
You are such a happy baby! The only time you cry is when you are hungry or if your diaper is poopy. You like to eat and you like to have a clean diaper. We can't blame you for this. You are the happiest both after you eat and once you wake up from your nap. You always greet us with a smile when we get you from your crib. Finley is also so happy to see you. Sometimes she even wakes you up so she can make you laugh or smile. She just continues to love you so much every single day.
You continue to love your Baby Einstein Mat. Your favourite toy attached to it is the sunshine with the rattle below it. I suspect that it is your favourite because it is the only one Finley allows you to keep attached to the mat. She doesn't like to share and tends to take your toys away. We try to stop her but you seem to be happy with what you have and are even content with nothing at all. You don't have much interest in all the teething toys that were a must-have with your sister but we have seen it grow with Sophie and a few others that were also favourites of hers.
You are able to hold your own bottle. We are so happy about this. It took you alot longer then it did your sister and sometimes you still want us to feed you but we are still happy that you can do it on your own if you choose!
You have outgrown your first gro-bag and just like your sister, you were able to stay in it until 6 months despite the 0 - 3 month size. You are now in the 12 month one I believe and you love it because there is so much freedom for you to kick your legs. Because you can kick your legs, you can kick your legs and move yourself all around your crib. You continue to need to sleep with your glow-worm, thing-a-ma-jig and your fisher price aquarium. You have the ability to sleep anywhere, anytime - no matter what. You have proven this by doing so in your highchair after lunch + at Madi's basketball game in my arms. You seem to love your morning nap despite the fact that you refused to do it until recently! You are sleeping about 12 hours every night and go down for a 2 hour nap in the morning and a 3 hour nap in the afternoon!
You have tried so much new food! You still hate mashed potatoes and broccoli but love chicken and rice. You even enjoyed pureed steak. It made me want to vomit but made you smile. So weird. Your sister wouldn't eat it until she was almost a year old! Your favourites continue to be apples, carrots, squash, peas, sweet potatoes. Your still eating rice cereal but we have also started making our own oatmeal for you. Daddy tried it first with you and he said you didn't really like it. But it turns out he didn't blend it for you and once he did that, you were content with it. Turns out mommy does know everything... ;)
You want to see Madi play basketball for the first time as well as Tanner play hockey. They both played exceptionally well - they so wanted to show off for you and Finley. Tanner had 2 goals and Madi had lots of points in her tournament.
You celebrated your first St. Patrick's Day. We, well Finley + I, had green pancakes for breakfast. I tried to form them into shamrocks but was unsuccessful. Next year, I will try to find a cookie cutter to do a better job. We also had Shepherd's Pie because it is a traditional Irish dish but I topped it with green mashed potatoes! It was exciting. I blended up some for you!
Your Grandma Gail is coming to visit tonight and we are having dinner with her and Uncle Brad tomorrow night. You got to visit with Aunty Faye, Aunty Leslie, Uncle Doug + Cousin Cameron while Daddy + I froze to death watching the Calgary Flames Alumni play. We celebrated Family Day by going to the zoo with Grandpa Don, Grandma Jen + Uncle Brad. You got to celebrate Daddy + Grandma Jen's Birthdays by going to the Broken Plate with them as well as Grandpa Don, Uncle Brad + Frunkl Jack. You were so very well behaved and looked so cute with a new outfit from Christmas on. We also had a nice visit with your Great Uncle Warren, Great Aunty Linda + cousin Eric as they drove through Calgary on their way home to Unity from a ski trip in BC.
So as you can see, you had a very busy month! I know next month will be just as busy so we will talk again then!
Love
Mommy.
PS Sorry there are not more photo's in your letter this month, but it's been a tough week. Next month will be better. xoxoxo

Shamrock Pancakes
I originally decided to make just green pancakes and then I thought of the great idea of doing Green Shamrock pancakes. But then I couldn't find a shamrock cookie cutter and I was not feeling up to taking me + the kids out to get some. Greg suggested making 3 connecting circles and then a stem so that's what I did.
Here is the green pancake mix. I just used green food coloring to turn it green. Thankfully I had some because there appeared to be a shortage in Calgary. They turned out really thick so I think either the recipe on allrecipes.com was wrong or I just miscalculated the amount of flour and milk I actually added.
This does not look like a shamrock. Although it looks better here then when it is finished cooking.
Once I flipped them over, I decided to add green sprinkles to the one side. These were left over from my roughrider cupcakes.
Cooked on sprinkle side
Cooked on non-sprinkle side. It really looks nothing like a shamrock. My problem was that the batter was too thick and I couldn't get it to do what I wanted. Finley had no idea anyways. I will do better yesterday.
Finley eating her pancakes. She only had a few bites which is pretty good considering how little she has had to eat in the last 4 days. She normally loves pancakes but I have to admit they were so dense that they were not enjoyable.
