Main Floor Reno's

A few weeks ago, we headed to Home Depot to pick out new carpet for our stairs and ended up on a mission to find hardwood that we loved and wanted to put on our main floor.  It ended up taking us to 5 different Home Depots from Mackenzie Town all the way to the Tuscany location just so we could get enough cases of the wood that we loved and had to have.

Last weekend, Greg started pulling up the current laminate and linoleum that is currently covering our floor.  The laminate came off and there were no surprises since we just installed that a few years ago so we knew what to expect.  However, when Greg pulled up the lino there was subfloor.  Not what we wanted.
We contemplated leaving the subfloor and installing subfloor in the other area so that would be level but research showed that was not a viable option for hardwood.  So Greg had to rip it out.  It was much harder than anticipated.  Basically, he had to use a saw to cut the subfloor into small squares and then use a hammer and some other tool to get it out.  He did this all day Saturday and Sunday and we are still not done.

The lino is still around the walls and cupboards, in the pantry, hallway and entry way.  All of this has to still be ripped out before we can even begin to lay hardwood.  What was to be a 2 weekend project has turned into at least a month.

Our living room furniture and all of our decor is in our garage which means our car is on our driveway.  You cannot walk in our kitchen without shoes because there are staples sticking out that don't cut your feet but man do they hurt like hell.  Penelope has to be in her high chair when down there and so we are not down there often.

Basically we are in our kitchen only to eat.  It is in such disarray that it makes me want to cook even less than I normally do.  There is dust everywhere.  Everywhere!!  On Sunday when Greg finished up, I cleaned all the counters, chairs, floors, table, fridge, stove, dishwasher and all other visible areas.  I thought if I did this, then it wouldn't seem so bad.  But after supper, there was a layer of dust on everything again!!!  Greg figures it is from all of the dust in the air and on the ceiling.  There is dust even in our microwave, our pantry, our dishwasher and some cupboards.  It is nothing short of awful and annoying.

Oh and the carpet we were going to Home Depot for?  We ended up going through Lowes.  They do free installation quotes and are half the price per square and they have far more selection for carpet.  We have the carpet picked out (dark grey to blend in the cat hair and cover up any sharpie incidents) and the guy came yesterday to measure the carpet.  Just waiting now for Lowes to call and tell us how much and when we can get it done.  So freaking excited to get this done!!  No more pink sharpie coloured stairs for us!!
