Piano Feet!

When I saw Finley playing her piano with her feet, the first thought that came to mind was Alvin Law. Not sure if you know who he is, but I am guessing if you are from Saskatchewan and have watched Telemiracle then you most likely do. She does this all the time and it's so funny. I guess if she ever loses use of her arms, she will still be able to play her beloved piano...hah

A Wonderful Surpise!

This morning I came into work and this beautiful bouquet of flowers were sitting on my desk! Apparently they came yesterday right after I left for a doctor's appointment. They are from my mom and sister congratulating Greg, Finley & I on the upcoming addition to our family! They were such a surprise and wonderful way to make up for less then stellar day yesterday!

Thanks Guys!!

Pants On The Floor...

Well maybe not quite, but I am sure if she could've figured it out, they would have been. Have no idea what possessed her to do this, but it was kinda funny - especially when she tried to walk with pants half way pulled down.

Oh and if you are wondering why she is wearing a pink shirt underneath her pretty yellow and white sweater, it was because she had an accident at daycare and had to change into spare t-shirt - not because I am color blind! haha

Garbage Pail Kid

Do you remember playing with Garbage Pail Kids when you were younger? I swear I hadn't thought of them in years, but it was the first thing that came to mind when I witnessed Finley doing what she was. This was the first time, but not the last. Thankfully, we only use this one for recycling in the bonus room....haha

Baby # 2

Greg, Finley & I are very happy to announce that we will be welcoming another member into our family in August.

Although she is still a little young to understand, I think Finley will be excited to be a big sister and will be great at it!

Here are some photos taken from "her" first photoshoot!

Olivia, Ethan top Alberta baby name list

The Alberta Government released the top and most unusual baby names for 2009 today and wow are there some interesting choices! I couldn't imagine naming my child Lightning or Ericlindross (can you say obsessed?). I guess I named by dog after Jarome Iginla but it's a dog, not my child! I will post the link to the top names site by Service Alberta but they haven't updated the site to show 2009 yet - can't wait to see how many Finley's were born last year!

Olivia, Ethan top Alberta baby name list

Hockey player Eric Lindros may have been the inspiration for one Alberta baby's name. (CBC)

Olivia and Ethan held the top spots on Alberta's most popular baby names list, as the province experienced yet another year of record-breaking births in 2009.

Alberta made way for 51,443 babies last year, an increase of 38 percent from the number of births in 2000.

The list of most popular names in 2009 looks much like the previous year's, with Ethan, Liam and Jacob topping the list for boys and Olivia, Isabella and Ava taking the top spots among baby girls.

Ethan has been the most popular boy's name for nine straight years in Alberta. Olivia tied with Ava as the top name in 2008.

Each year, Alberta's vital statistics branch also takes note of unusual names.

Names with a Hollywood connection included Ledger, Sigourney and Sutherland.

And one baby — Ericlindross — may have been named after a hockey star. Eric Lindros played for the Dallas Stars and the Toronto Maple Leafs before his retirement in 2007.

Parents chose some unusual names last year, including Argyll, Bison, Boss, Chaos, Cherubim, Dice, Helix, Kal-El, Lightning, Morpheous, Mystery, Thunder and Whip for boys.

Unusual names for girls included Albertarose, Amazyn, Comfort, Epic, Fury, Fyre, Halleluya, Infiniti, Mischiefs, Mystique, Peanut, Twinkle, Victory and Whysper.

Names possibly inspired by literature, mythology, astrology or history include Aragorn, Archimedes, Cyrano, Draco, Michelangelo, Neptune and Voltaire for boys. Girls' names included Calliope, Cinderella, Gemini, Hermione, Pandora, Perseus, Phantasia and Virgo.

Seinfeld's Poison Ps' of Parenting

Jerry Seinfeld Reveals the ‘Poison Ps’ of Parenting

In a revealing new interview with PARADE, comedian Jerry Seinfeld speaks at length about his approach to parenting Sascha, 9, Julian Kal, 6 ½, and Shepherd Kellen, 4 ½, his three children with wife Jessica Seinfeld.

At the heart of their philosophy are the “poison Ps” — three rules the couple swear by.

First on the list is praise, something Jerry feels parents dole out more often than they should. “We tell our kids, ‘Great job!’ too much,” he says. Problem solving claims the second position, with Jerry opining that society “refuse[s] to let our children have problems.” He elaborates,

“Problem-solving is the most important skill to develop for success in life, and we for some reason can’t stand it if our kids have a situation that they need to ‘fix.’ Let them struggle –it’s a gift.”

As for Jerry’s final “poison P” — giving kids too much pleasure — the point was made by a mom ordering cookies for her three children not far from where the interview was being conducted. “Can you believe this?” he asks. “It’s 5:30 p.m. — when will they have dinner? At 8?”

As for why parents overindulge their children, Jerry goes on to share his “far-fetched” theory, which centers on the notion that kids today are not as innocent as they once were.

“We feel so guilty for destroying that innocence — which is what we did — so we’re now trying to repair that by creating perfect childhoods for our children. The reason we overdo it so much is because we feel so bad about it.”

The best way to ensure that children grow up to be good adults is to set a good example for them, according to Jerry. “Kids are not going to do what you tell them to do or think like you tell them to think,” he explains. “Kids are watching how you deal with that waiter or that handyman, and they are probably more likely to imitate you.”

Imitating Sascha, Julian and Shepherd has been comedy gold for Jerry, 55, who says that his children have provided him with “a great creative corridor” when it comes to his stand-up routines. “If I was younger, I’d have six kids by now,” he confesses.

“I love it. I love having a family and kids and all the madness. There is no aspect of it I don’t like. Even when it’s horrible, I love it. I didn’t realize how tired of single life I was and how ready I was for married life.

Happy Valentine's Day

We hope everybody had a wonderful Valentine's Day with their loved ones! I spent mine with my Lil Valentine since Greg was on his way to Vancouver for the Olympics with Finley's Frunkl Jack. We had a lovely day that started at Walmart where we picked up a few things including a new outfit for Finley that we just had to have - it was so cute and perfect for spring plus a Plex doll. Plex was only $5 and it was daddy's favorite Yo Gabba Gabba character and Finley and I decided that Foofa needed a friend! We then came home where we spent the day playing, watching the Daytona 500 and ended the evening with Alex Bilodeau winning Canada's first ever GOLD medal on Canadian Soil - so exciting to watch!

Finley had a bit of a Valentine's Day theme this week so here a few photos of her Valentine's gear!!

The Vanity is her actual Valentine's Day present from Greg and I. Unfortunately, it requires tools to be put together so it will remain in this box until Daddy gets home next weekend!!

What Would You Do?

I am not sure how many of you watch the TV show Private Practice. Last week's episode made both Greg and I think, "What would you do?"

If you didn't watch it, here's what happened: A married couple have 8 year old twin girls who are dying of I think Leukemia but I can't remember. They both need a blood transfusion to survive. Neither parent is a match, so as desperate as they are to save their children they take the mom's eggs and the dad's sperm and genetically create a baby that would be the same blood type as the girls so that they could use the cord blood to save them (like they did in My Sister's Keeper). After 2 years of trying to get the DNA right, the mom becomes pregnant with a little boy who is born happy and healthy 9 months later. The little girls are sicker then ever and desperately need this cord blood to survive. Unfortunately there is only enough blood to save one child.

How do you pick one child to save and one child to die? Seriously, how as a parent, do you make that decision? Why should you EVER even be forced to make that decision? I hope that neither myself or any of friends and family ever have to. The mom immediately said she couldn't make that decision and if they both couldn't live, then they would both have to die. The father tells one of the doctors that he could make that decision because even though as a parent you are supposed to love your children equally, he loved one daughter more. Having only one child, I don't know if that would be possible - to love one child more or less then the other. I would like to think not, but really I have no idea.

The parents then proceed to fight over this, which is quite understandable given the situation that they are in. Both are trying to justify why they are right and the other is wrong. One of the girls gets an infection and is fighting for her life. She is now to weak to undergo any surgeries or blood transfusions. Basically she is going to die. The doctor pleads with the parents to use the blood to save the other daughter and eventually they agree to do so. Neither of them are able to tell their children that one is going to die and one is going to live. But I mean who could blame them? Would you want the responsibility of telling your child, your flesh and blood, that they are going to die? I definitely wouldn't and neither would you.

So both little girls are sitting in bed reading Little Women when Cooper has to tell them that Niki is too sick to get the transfusion and that Kelly is going to get all the blood from their baby brother. Niki, of course, is upset that she is too sick for the transfusion and is aware that her time on earth is limited. Kelly freaks out because she doesn't want to live if her sister can't and says if we both can't get have the transfusion then nobody does. By this time, I am bawling my eyes out. These kids are 8 years old and going through this. Yes I know this is a TV show, but it possibly could happen to any one of us. Niki tells Kelly that she has to get the blood transfusion, that she needs to live because mommy and daddy need her and baby Trevor needs her. Again they are 8 years old. So Kelly goes and gets the transfusion while Niki lays in her bed, basically waiting to die when the parents bring in baby Trevor - who, by the way, has been neglected because the mom was so afraid that he would replace the daughter she is losing. She says to Addison, I want Niki to spend some time with her brother Trevor before she dies. Thankfully, the show ends with all kids still alive and I say thankfully because I am not sure if I could've handled seeing her die on the show.

So there are a number of "What would you do's" in this tv show. Greg asked me if I had would genetically create a baby via IVF in order to save my existing child's life? Would I? I have no idea. I would like to think that I would do everything possible in my power to save my children, but I don't know if I would do that. My biggest fear for doing that would be that the child who was "created" would never feel that are here for all the right reasons (again see My Sister's Keeper). Would you feel the same about that child - especially if it did not save the intended child in the first place?

What would you do if you had to choose for one child to live and one to die? How do you make that decision? Can you make that decision? Should you have to make that decision? So many questions without any answers. And the truth of the matter is that you will never ever know until you are ever in the situation that these parents were above.

Leave My Grilled Cheese Alone!

The weekend Finley got the measels, Greg had made her a grilled cheese sandwich for lunch as he usually does on Sundays. He cut them into little pieces for Finley to eat, and while she is a good eater, rarely does she eat an entire grilled cheese sandwich. He brought them up to tv room for her to eat and helped himself to a piece as well. She was not impressed and grabbed all the remaining pieces and held them in her arms until she was finished. Normally she is a pretty good sharer so I would like to think it was because of the measels and the top molar coming in and not a reflection of her personality...

These latest teeth may be the death of me....or her...

I have never had a problem with FInley teething. From the very beginning, teething never affected her sleeping or her attitude. The only real difference I noticed was that she drooled, her cheeks were red, the occasional diaper rash and she preferred her bottles to actual food.

Over Christmas I noticed her bottom molars were already in. When did that happen? I totally missed that and they obviously didn't bother her at all as I didn't notice a change in her behavior or eating habits and daycare never mentioned anything. Woohoo, I thought - Finley is super baby!

Right around the time FInley got the measles, she was really irritable but I attributed this to the fever she had and the measles that now covered her body. However, the irritability continued long after the measles disappeared. One evening I noticed her cheeks were insanely red. She had no fever so I thought I would check to see if she had more teeth coming in. Sure enough, her right top molar was coming in. It had barely broken through, but it was obviously bothering her. Nothing on the other side - just that one little bud. So I put her to bed and in the morning she woke up with an awful diaper rash. Oh crap I thought.

She went off to daycare and when Greg picked her up later that day, they said she had been very cranky. Crankiness, diaper rash, red cheeks, drooling - Finley was definitely teething. This was last Friday and it's still going on. Well at least the irritability is. I am assuming it's still her teeth otherwise Finley is already developing unpleasant behavior that is making me dread the terrible twos...seriously how could it get much worse?

I was quite lucky in that Finley was a happy baby from the time she was born until about 2 weeks ago. Julia, a girl I work with, said Finley was perfect her first year, you shouldn't expect perfection forever. I assumed, for one reason or another, that my perfect, happy, content baby would turn in to a happy, content toddler. Nothing makes her happy - not toys, not being held, not watching Yo Gabba Gabba or the Doodlebops, not milk, not goldfish, not arrowroot cookies not even the occasional bit of ice cream. To say I am at my wits end would be an understatement. It is so difficult to work all day, pick her up and come home with a child who is so unhappy. If any of the above do make her happy, it is only brief. Funny enough, she is enjoying her baths.

Maybe that's my problem. For so long she was a happy baby and hated baths and now it's the opposite. I would totally be happy to have my happy, bath hating baby back. An evening of peace would be so rewarding - hell I would even settle for an hour of peace. How does a child go from happily playing with her toys to HATING everything?

If anybody has any ideas or words of encouragement, I will gladly accept them. I need something to get me through this.....

A (Much Needed) Weekend Away...

Last Friday, Greg called me at work to tell me we were going to Banff National Park for the weekend. I was excited at first but the thought of all my laundry, cleaning, groceries and everything else on my lengthy "to-do" list came to mind. I resisted at first and asked why we were doing it and he was like it was an early valentine's day present since he was leaving for Vancouver on the 14th and would be gone all week. I thought that was kinda sweet, so off to Banff we went.

This was Finley unpacking her suitcase. It ended up all over the floor! I was concerned about what would be in it since Greg packed it all by himself. I usually don't trust him to do stuff like that - he did not a bad job...
Every year in Lake Louise they have a weekend dedicated to ice sculpture that takes place on Lake Louise and in front of the Lake Louise Chateau. The hotel we stayed at also participated in the ice sculpture craze...most were Olympic Inspired....and amazingly awesome!
This was the hotel we stayed in Lake Louise. I think it was called the Lake Louise Inn...It was a combination of hotels and motels all on one property. Plus it had a pool, 2 hot tubs and a steam room. We hit the pool Saturday night after supper but we only stayed about 20 minutes if that. Finley may love her baths now but pools she still hates! We got a great deal on the room and was upgraded to Executive Queen for no charge. Greg got it for 60 bucks a night, which apparently is around half of the regular night, on priceline.com which he seems to be addicted to!
This was the skating rink on Lake Louise. You entered at your own risk. Had to take a photo of the "zamboni" - it was so cool!
Greg and Finley standing on the skating rink...Her first time on the ice!
The beautiful winter scenery that is Lake Louise. Such a magical place regardless of the season. Love living so close to the mountains - we are so blessed to have them in our backyard.
We spent part of our visit walking downtown Banff! This was Finley in front of the big bear at The Fudgery which just happens to be the home of the BEST maple fudge in the entire world. It is so delicious but sits like rocks in your stomach. I don't recommend eating it for breakfast...haha. One thing I did notice about Banff and Lake Louise is their heavy promotion of the Olympic games in Vancouver. The lamp posts display olympic 2010 flags, every souvenier store is fully stocked in every type of olympic paraphenilia known to man.
We spent part of the after at Johnston's Canyon which is a personal favorite hike of ours. We do it at least once a year and is usually our kick off hike of the spring to get us going! I had never been in the middle of winter. At first it's really strange because you don't hear any running water like you do in the spring or the summer. It's a very serene feeling. The photo above is water frozen along part of the canyon. Although the photo doesn't display it, some of the ice along the canyon was just the most amazing shade of blue. It was just a beautiful shade...you kinda tell above but not really, I just couldn't capture the beauty of it
Finley had a blast walking Johnston's Canyon! She was all bundled up in her stroller and loved every minute of it! Normally we backpack her but we figured it wouldn't be too busy, it would be safer in icy sections and we were only going to do the Lower Falls so we decided to use the stroller with the safety attachment to Greg. We hoped that she would nap but she would have no such thing!
Another beautiful sight in Johnston's Canyon. This is a better photo that captures the pristine color of the ice - especially at the top and part of the middle. In case you haven't noticed, I love water falls - frozen or flowing!
I thought that it was interesting how random parts of the water were not frozen and running freely. I don't know how or why it happens but would be interested to find out. I found this shape to be more interesting then the others, it's kinda like a shape of a fish or possibly a leaf Look how clear the water is, gotta love fresh mountain water...
This is the pool of water that is below the lower falls. It was nice and unfrozen and beautiful!
This is lower falls frozen as heck. It was so cool to see it. We seriously thought that the water was going to come breaking through at any second.
This is a photo from the cave at lower falls. You can see the water fall gushing underneath the ice and flowing out the bottom. The cave was insanely slippery on the inside. I nearly wiped out a bunch of times.
After a long day of sightseeing, hiking and shopping, we ended our day by having a delicious dinner at The Keg. The food was absolutely wonderful - nothing beats their bacon wrapped scallops. They are amazing and come highly recommended from both Greg and I. Although Finley looks happy in the above photo, she was pretty cranky the whole time. But that's a whole other blog about that....

This was our last day at the hotel before we headed back to reality. Greg may look sleepy but it was just disappointment as we had just found out about the Dion Phaneuf trade to the Maple Leafs. The disappointment furthered when we saw what we got back. Anyways, back to the photo above, you will notice Finley is wearing a McDonald's bib. I forgot to put a bib in her diaper bag, so when walking by the McDonald's in Banff, I stole a bunch so that we would be covered. Finley didn't like it much since it was almost impossible for her to pull off!

All in all, it was a wonderful, much needed weekend away from the chaos that is our life. Even though I had to spend Monday and Tuesday nights doing laundry and cleaning my house so that it was at least respectable, it was worth every minute of it. The next few weeks are going to busy for Greg and I so it was really nice to get away from it all. It was the first time in a LONG time that I headed to work on a Monday and felt so relaxed and refreshed - which was a good thing considering how swamped I have been at work the last few days!

Thanks Greg for a wonderful weekend away! I loved every minute of it and I can't wait to do it again sometime soon!
